The Eternal City is one of the best places in the world for a short break or as a base to see more of Italy.
Rome oozes history and wherever you go you’ll be reminded of its ancient past. Start in the ancient Forum where you can walk among the ruined buildings where Caesar and other emperors once trod.
The Coliseum is one of Rome’s most iconic landmarks and you’ll enjoy sitting in the famous arena where gladiators once fought. Then head to the Piazza Navona for coffee and admire the Bernini fountains. Even this famous square was once a Roman arena. The Pantheon is another inspirational landmark here and has stood in the city for thousands of years.
Rome is also famed for the Vatican and you can head to St Peter’s Basilica and view the paintings in the Sistine Chapel. Some days the Pope gives an open air service in St Peters Square.
Of course, with any trip to Rome or Italy in general, travel insurance is a must have.
Take time to walk over to the Castel St Angelo and across the River Tiber. Don’t forget to spend some time shopping here, perhaps on the Via Corsi with its fashionable stores or in one of the many markets across the city. There’s the Spanish Steps to where you can relive a few movie moments and the fabulous Trevi Fountain.
All over Rome there are excellent restaurants serving regional specialties and many are within a short walk of most hotels and attractions. This is very much a walking city and whether you go to the Catacombs or head to the Palatine Hills you’ll be awestruck by how beautiful Rome is and how much history is within the city.
But if you want to return to Rome there’s one more thing to do and that is to throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain.
